A travel to Greece

11/11/2015

On October 3rd, I took a plane to meet my mother in Athens, Greece. I had my vacations for this year and then I had the chance to visit a country that wasn't really in my list of priorities, but it surprised me a lot. I have a friend that lives in the capital, so I thought it would be nice to use the opportunity both as a travel to a new place and a moment to know a person I've been talking for a while. I didn't spend much time in Athens, but we had the chance to visit so many cities, including Oia, in Santorini (picture above), which was one of the most overwhelming because of its beauty. To be honest, I ended up understanding that I don't really care about ruins, but I am a sucker for landscapes and art - so museums are more interesting for me, rather than ruins or archeological sites.

We arrived in Athens on a Sunday late at night. Our hotel was right in front of the ruins of the Zeus temple. And even if I don't care much about archeological sites and this one is already kinda destroyed, one cannot deny that both this, and the Acropolis, are incredible both for their dimension and details. Unfortunately, few sculptures from that period survived until our times, and all of them are now in museums. I didn't make to go to the national archeological museum, which seems to be very good, but I saw some pieces in Delphi.

The Parliament
No parlamento, me chamou a atenção a quantidade de cachorro simplesmente jogado no chão haha..

There are many dogs and cats in the streets of Athens and in many other Greek cities. In the Parliament, what really caught my attention was the amount of dogs all over the ground haha.. I don't care about buildings that represent governments or anything like this, only when they are trully works of art, which wasn't the case in Athens. So I decided that it was mandatory to take a picture of this dog that represented my feelings so well during the tour with a guide that kept repeating the same information 500 times, never adding anything.

After that, we went straight to Santorini to spend 3 days there. We thought it could be too long, but the island is so incredibly beautiful that you're not really able to get tired of it. Besides the heat, our stay was pretty good. We made a tour on an yacht and saw the white and red beaches, including the volcano that is placed on an island. Supposedly, it has some kind of mud that is healthy for your skin, but I didn't find anything in the hot springs. In any case, I loved it especially because I paid a good price and it included a barbecue right before watching the sunset. Simply perfect and with few people on board. :)

It's just unbelievably beautiful how blue is the sea and the sky. And how white this t-shirt was before I put it in the washing machine with colored clothing lol :(

Impossible to stay fit with such amazing breakfast in an even more amazing view
Some posing to pretend I'm rich and gorgeous haha
My mother made our reservation in Esperas Hotel, a beautiful and comfortable place in Oia
According to the guide, Santorini's houses are mostly painted in white and blue because it, back in the days, the lightest color gave them the feeling of a healthy place, while the blue stays for the color in the sky and the sea

You know, it's basically impossible to take pictures of Santorini without tourists...

Just more posing because, I mean, look at this shade of blue!

A witch doll hanging outside of a puppet store in Oia. Unfortunately photographies weren't allowed inside

This had about 4 meters of depth, but the water was so crystal clean that you could see the fish and the ground from the yacht

So, speaking of tourists... There're so many Chinese and Japanese people in Santorini. I couldn't understand why and my co-workers didn't explain to me. So my Greek friend told me that during 10-20 years, a very famous Chinese soap opera had this couple that disappeared all of a sudden in the episode before the finale. They end up being found in Santorini, marrying, so that's why you can even find wedding and specialized photography services being offered even by Chinese. And you can't complain about it. As the city is all white and the landscape is simply overwhelming, it's obvious that this is the perfect place for a honeymoon.

On the other day I went to see the black beach. The tour guide mentioned it as it was the most ordinary thing ever, but probably because here in Europe they have many beaches like this, with stones. Personally, I loved this more than the others, which we didn't even have the chance to visit, actually. So, although the ground is covered by stones, they are so tiny that they feel soft. Also, it doesn't leave you dirty or sticky like regular sand does!

After a quick stop in Athens again, we went to Delphi in a road trip with a great guide this time. She really shared lots of information, but I still missed more of a mythological context, together with the historical, political and religious. I mean, she told stuff about mythology during her explanation regarding religion, but as we were visiting temples and passing by places that were described and part of stories such as the Odissey, where the gods were among humans... Well, anyway. We visited the ruins in Delphi, which was a temple for Apolo. Attached to it, there's also a museum with amazing sculptures.

Right after that, we went back to the road in direction to our hotel near Meteora. Buffet for dinner! :) The food wasn't that good, but I'm more about quantity than quality HAHA Ok, not always, but... Anyway, in the morning after, we woke up super early to visit the monasteries placed in the top of these rocky mountains that look like they are floating in the air. It seems like that because that region used to be a hydrographic basin thousands of years ago, but it dried and the stones are the remaining of this ancient landscape. They are thinner in their base and they are so high that they're mostly covered by mist, so that they trully look like they're floating - which is the meaning of the term "meteora".

Getting up there wasn't the pain I thought it would be and I even saw a couple of cats in the road. The first monastery we visited was Monastery of the Holy Trinity, which is only for orthodox monks. It's one of the few that are open to the public, but we can't take photos inside the chapel, which is all completely covered with frescoes in the inner part. Even though I'm not a huge fan of Bizantine art, I still found that place amazing, all covered with images, from the bottom to the top.

To end this tour, we headed to the Holy Monastery of St. Stephen, which is only for nuns. I saw some of them there and, by the way, in both monasteries women need to wear skirts. I mean, you need to wear it over your pants, so... hahaha.. how ironic is that? Anyhow, this last monastery wasn't too exciting, because they only had some artworks in exhibition and the chapel was being restored, so the frescoes were fresh and, as my mother said, this is no fun at all. But the place is all very well conserved and I believe that religious people should have a really good, holy and inspired time when visiting there, despite of being catholic or orthodox.

I guess I discovered some pleasure and passion in photographing lonely people. Maybe now I can relate to them?

And this was my travel to Greece. I took a long time to finish this post, but I finally made it and I hope you liked. I still want to write about the day I spent in London, but as I photographed just a few things (I was extremely tired after spending 10 hours in the airport due to a cancelled flight), I won't need much time - hopefully.
